I get asked a lot about my process and how I get my ideas for new cards and the truth is I don't follow a particular 'recipe'. Some ideas can very quickly go from a quick sketch to a final product, whereas others can take up lots of my time drawing and redrawing, playing around with colours and then never even finishing them!
I'm always thinking about new ideas and how they might look, so whenever I see something which triggers me to think of a new product, I'll make a quick note of it and come back to it when I have time to draw. I'm not too organised with the process however and I'm constantly finding notes everywhere about new ideas! I think I need a dedicated sketch book just for this reason....
Here are some of my quicker designs which I was pretty much happy with after the initial sketch.
I find that I'm much quicker at designing cards than prints. The prints take me a long time, I like to do a first sketch, then edit it on my computer, then print it out and look at it for a while. I pin it up on my wall and leave it there until I feel like editing it again, sometimes I just tweak the colours and sometimes I redraw the entire thing!
This A-Z print took me a long time, I played around with the sizes of the illustrations and letters a lot and also the placement! I'm really pleased with how it turned out though.
My rainbow print was pinned to my wall finished a long time before I put it on my website! I couldn't decide if it was finished or not and so I showed it to a friend (with a brilliant eye) who thought it was great so I added it to my shop and sold one that day! Sometimes it can be difficult to know when to stop, I find it really helpful to run it by another person to hear what they say and see how my gut feeling responds to them. It usually works!
Some sketches just stay in my pile like this one.....I think I need to use this one for something..maybe a print? What do you think?
I'm currently working on 3 new print designs (2 more A-Z's and a space print) which I hope to be able to show you soon! Are there any other print designs you'd like to see from me? I absolutely love getting suggestions from my customers.
Thanks so much for reading,
